what can I expect will happen when we meet for the first time?
Our work together requires that you feel safe and understood. It is important that you trust your comfort level as we discuss your reasons for deciding to begin counseling/therapy.
It would be a good idea to ask me questions about anything that concerns you.
We will begin to form a plan and talk about goals as I listen to your feelings, give feedback, ask more questions, make suggestions and share information.
how often do we meet?
At the beginning we usually meet once a week for 45-50 minutes. After 4 to 6 sessions, we can consider changing this schedule based on your progress toward your goals.
how long will I be in counseling/therapy?
There is no answer that works for everyone. Therapy can be direct and short term if you have a specific problem with a clear goal. However, if you have a persistent issue that has been in your life for a long time than our work together may require more time.
what if my problem is with my spouse/partner?
do they have to come in with me?
No, they do not have to come in with you. Much progress can be made by making a commitment to work on yourself. This may encourage the other person to join us at a later date. It is a good idea to inform your partner/spouse of your decision to begin counseling/therapy.
what if I don’t want to talk about something you bring up?
You don’t have to talk about anything that you are not prepared to say. You may feel more comfortable over time to share information that will be helpful to your well-being and progress.
do I have to come to your office for counseling/therapy?
We can make arrangements to have a session on the telephone or by video conferencing.
do you take insurance?
I am an “out of network provider” for most insurance companies. This means I accept “out of network” payment plans from Anthem, Aetna, Cigna, United and others.
I will try to meet your financial needs within your budget as we discuss the amount of your co-pay for each session.
Sometimes calling your insurance company can be confusing. Please call me with your insurance information and I will help you find out your specific benefits.
